I have carried concealed for 5 years now. In that time I have carried a few handguns I loved (and some that I would rather throw than shoot). When I started carrying and training with my P229 2 years ago I immediately knew it was the one, no gun has ever checked all of the boxes for me quite as well as my Sig.
The P229 is a compact duty pistol, derived from the P226 and the P228, and is the official duty pistol of many government agencies on both federal and state level. It is the pistol that protects the first family since 1999 (secret service), as well as every American that takes a flight (air marshals). If the secret service counts on it to protect vip’s then I see no reason why it wouldn’t be the best choice to protect my family!
Pros
- Weight – I love the weight, for some it’s a deal breaker in a carry gun but the weight on my belt is a fair trade for faster follow up shots and less felt recoil
- Ergonomics – The E2 grip fits my hand so well, and the texture keeps it in place with every shot
- Safety – I like having a manual decocker, and the firm pull of the DA shot is peace of mind in lieu of a manual safety
- Sights – The SIGLITE night sights are great, the gun stays in the safe by my bed because I know if I need to grab it in a low light situation they will be visible and ready
Cons
- Price – Coming in at $999 retail the sig can be a tough pill to swallow for the casual shooter.
- Weight – While it is a pro for me, this can be a dealbreaker for a ccw for some. It is a larger framed, heavier gun and can feel bulky after a few hours of carry (I couldn’t even feel it after a few weeks of carry though.)
In an era of small plastic guns for concealed carry, the P229 offers something unique. It offers extended firepower and stability that is often compromised in a never ending quest for carry comfort. The P229 gives me the heft, stability and fun factor of a 1911 but with a modern update, a firm American gun.
The price can be a deterrent to some, in a world full of $200-$500 carry options most of us wont give it a second look after we see the price tag. The journey is different for every person, and my goal is to help others navigate this path easier. The most valuable gun is the one you will carry everyday, and any gun is better than no gun (there may be a few guns that make that statement false).
I will be the first to admit that I am biased, I am a Sig fan through and through, but when it comes down to it there is no handgun I would rather have in my hand!
